The summer schedule for fashion in Paris doesn’t kick-off until the end of June, but fashion fanatics can get a head start by shopping a time capsule of runway fashion and couture at Treasures from the Ebony Fashion Fair on June 10th at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers.
Treasures from the Ebony Fashion Fair will be the third sale Leslie Hindman Auctioneers has conducted for the Ebony collection, the most recent having taken place in 2013. The sale will include over 500 lots of garments that didn’t make the first or second cut, but only because they are the “best of the best,” essential pieces from the Ebony collection making their debut at auction.
When Eunice W. Johnson turned the “fashion fair” feature in Ebony magazine into a charity event, the Ebony Fashion Fair was born. Both the publication and event were concerned with creating an inclusive consumer culture for African Americans in the design, art and fashion worlds. Five decades later, the Fashion Fair has come to be known as the largest traveling fashion runway show in the world and has raised over 55 million dollars for charity.
Bidders will now have a chance to compete for a piece of fashion history from both an iconic cultural brand and the world’s fashion capitals of Paris, London, Milan, Rome and New York.
Some of the most prized garments in the collection are a Yves Saint Laurent black sequined gown from the Fall/Winter 1990 collection and a Yves Saint Laurent yellow faille Domino coat ensemble from the Fall/Winter 1983 collection. Each of these looks was included in the first complete retrospective of the Yves Saint Laurent oeuvre at the Petit Palais in Paris in 2010.
Show stopping gowns from Oscar de la Renta will be offered, many of which are runway looks. For those with a more avant-garde palate, there will be a selection of Paco Rabanne, Issey Miyake and Thierry Mugler.
The list of designers featured in the auction reads like a fashion encyclopedia with garments from the Houses of Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Emanuel Ungaro, Halston, Issey Miyake, Jean-Louis Scherrer, Nina Ricci, Paco Rabanne, Patrick Kelly, Pierre Cardin, Stephen Burrows, Thierry Mugler, Valentino and Vivienne Westwood.
If you missed the chance to bid at the first two Ebony Fashion Fair auctions, run don’t walk. This is an exclusive opportunity to shop the special Ebony collection that has remained tied to the organization until now. In the spirit of bringing high-end fashion to others, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is pleased to work with Johnson Publishing Company in celebrating the collection’s legacy once more.
A portion of auction proceeds will go to Johnson College Prep, a public, 4-year charter high school located in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago’s south side.
