Director – Luxury Accessories and Vintage Fashion

Palm Beach, Florida

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, one of the nation’s leading and fastest growing fine art auction houses, is seeking a self-starting, highly motivated, experienced professional to oversee our Luxury Accessories and Vintage Fashion department.

The Director will be responsible for generating consignments for auctions, evaluating, authenticating, negotiating and selecting a mix of luxury property for each auction, researching, preparing and managing the sales through live and online auctions, be responsible for creating potential growth opportunities and will be expected to meet yearly consignment goals. The Director will cultivate and maintain relationships with top dealers, institutions and private collectors worldwide.

Qualified candidates must possess a solid familiarity with luxury accessories and vintage couture from prestigious brands (Hermes, Chanel, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, etc.). In addition, successful candidates will possess excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills and the ability to work under pressure and prioritize to meet strict deadlines. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required and at least three years of experience within the auction or luxury industry.

Staff Gemologist

Chicago, Illinois

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is seeking a Staff Gemologist in the Fine Jewelry and Timepieces Department.

The position is primarily responsible for all diamond work associated with the evaluation of property for auction including highly accurate carat weight calculation and grading, cataloguing consigned property, researching authenticity and provenance, and reviewing client inquiries to determine sale potential.

In addition to cataloguing property, this position also works with a team of specialists and account executives to coordinate Fine Jewelry and Timepieces auctions throughout the year. This includes developing the layout of the sale, assisting with catalog production, setting up exhibitions, preparing condition reports, and working the auction and preview. A limited amount of travel within the United States may be required.

The successful candidate will possess excellent communication, interpersonal and administrative skills, be able to work in a fast paced environment and have a strong attention to detail. The ideal applicant will be a Graduate Gemologist (required) with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the Jewelry Industry as well as experience with diamonds, colored stones, and signed jewelry.

This position requires a minimum of 5 years appraisal experience, excellent customer service skills, basic computer knowledge, and an understanding of the current market prices of gemstones. A working knowledge of contemporary, antique and vintage jewelry descriptions is a plus.

Specialist, 19th Century American and European Art

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, one of the nation’s leading and fastest growing fine-art auction houses, seeks a Fine Art Specialist.

Responsibilities:

  • Focus primarily on business development for the Fine Art Department with an emphasis on securing consignments and building long term client relationships with private collectors, institutions and industry contacts
  • Research and catalogue property for auction with the goal of assigning auction estimates, also valuing property for IRS (estate tax, gift tax, donation, etc.) and insurance appraisals as needed
  • Act as the senior contact for client inquiries regarding auction, consignment and appraisal services, negotiation of consignment terms and explanation of the auction process relating to Fine Art
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop strategies to reach new potential consignors and ensure seamless client service
  • Proactively develop new opportunities to grow the volume of transactions on both the consignment and buyer sides of the department
  • Work with other senior specialists to promote the auction by helping clients at auction previews, speaking to clients about the property, developing, tracking and communicating client interest in lots and executing bids at auction

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates possess a minimum of 3-5 years experience in the auction or gallery setting, direct hands-on experience with and knowledge of 19th century American and European art, excellent communication and client service skills, a strong sense of professionalism and a proven ability to initiate new business. Bachelors or master’s degree in art history or business preferred. Some domestic travel will be required.

Internships

Chicago, Illinois

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers offers junior and senior level undergraduate students and graduate students unpaid spring, summer and fall internships at our West Loop location in Chicago. Successful candidates will be placed in positions according to their backgrounds and interests and will gain first-hand experience in auction house operations. A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required.
