Leslie Hindman Auctioneers announces the sale of fine art, furniture and decorative arts from the private collection of Lars Bolander, a world famous interior designer and tastemaker
Shopping the private collection of an interior design pioneer is a rare opportunity, but on March 21, 2015 the public will be able to acquire art and furniture beloved by Lars Bolander, one of Sweden’s foremost interior designers and an innovator of Swedish design in the United States.
Influenced by his diverse education and experiences, Mr. Bolander has developed a unique style all his own that has both a theatrical side and love of simplicity. “As a young boy growing up it was my background and culture that influenced me,” said Mr. Bolander. “Later in life it was all of the traveling I did, seeing the world.”
Recent trends in residential design have grown from clean, subdued and sustainable motivations. Scandinavian design is known for a minimalism that alludes to functionality, born from the idea that beauty and function should be married and accessible. However, classical training in Scandinavian design is only one influence that has graced Mr. Bolander’s career and personal taste.
His collection is both coherent and varied, classic and fun. It includes traditional Swedish forms such as Gustavian chairs, a Gustavian settee and works by Swedish artist Dan Nygard. At the same time, much of his collection was amassed through worldwide travel and exploration. Many objects were found in unique locations with intriguing backgrounds and interesting stories. His European aesthetic is exemplified by a variety of furniture, decorative arts and works of art, evident in such objects as an unusual pair of terracotta busts of Moorish gentlemen and paintings by François Gall. Whimsical items inspired by a designer’s eye include architectural trompe l’oeil furniture and the signature silvered brass ram heads used in Mr. Bolander’s personal logo.
After many years of having a showroom on “Antique Row” in West Palm Beach, Mr. Bolander has decided to sell his nearby home, Bamboo Hill, and personal treasures in order to establish residence elsewhere. “We have lived with these items and have certainly enjoyed them; now it is time to change,” said Mr. Bolander.
Lars Bolander has authored two books: Lars Bolander. Interior Design and Inspiration and Lars Bolander’s Scandinavian Design. The later discusses styles of the past and future from all four Scandinavian countries: Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. The former highlights the worldwide influences that have contributed to Mr. Bolander’s taste for elegant, theatrical interiors.
Peers across the globe have interviewed Mr. Bolander for their own interior design books, and his expert opinions have been featured in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Vogue, Elle Décor, the Wall Street Journal and many other major publications.
The auction will take place March 21, 2015 at 10:00 AM ET at the West Palm Beach saleroom located at 1608 South Dixie Hwy, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401. For more information, including detailed condition reports and bid assistance, please call 561.833.8053.
