Calder Stabile Realizes Over $800,000

The Post War and Contemporary Art sale on September 24 at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers sold three Alexander Calder works above high estimates. His Long Brass Tail on Black and Red, 1956, sold for $845,000 against a presale estimate of $600,000 – 800,000. Calder’s painting Planets, 1976, sold for $81,250 ($40,000 – 60,000) and his Midnight Sun, 1973, sold for $75,000 ($40,000 – 60,000).

 

Additional highlights were Moutons de Pierre, (a pair of sheep) by Francoise-Xavier Lalanne that sold for $257,000 with a presale estimate of $150,000 – 250,000, Jack Goldstein’s Untitled (Lightning), 1984, which sold for $161,000 ($80,000 – 120,000) and Bill Taylor’s Self Portrait Blue-House, which sold for $137,000 ($20,000 – 30,000).

 

Paintings by Asian artists sold high, such as an untitled work by Hisao Domoto from 1960 that sold for $75,000 against a presale estimate of $5,000 – 7,000 and an untitled work by Chuang Che from 1990 that sold for $30,000 ($20,000 – 30,000).
