Ann and Lee Constable
Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is proud to offer a selection of exemplary works by Thomas Hart Benton from the Estate of Ann and Lee Constable.
In 1960, Ann and Lee Constable became neighbors with Rita and Thomas Hart Benton, forging a lifelong friendship. Over the years, the couple received many gifts from the artist, including the two works offered for sale: a study that Benton did for his wife, Rita, in 1922 of the family at South Beach on Martha’s Vineyard, and the larger needlework canvas, traced by the artist and embroidered by Rita. Before her passing, Mrs. Benton asked her dear friend to finish the work for her; however, Ann could not bring herself to remove the carefully placed needle that still remains where Rita left it today.
When asked about the sudden death of the artist in 1975, Ann stated, “Tom Benton isn’t dead…a man who painted that much life will never die.” The Constables continued to honor this legacy through different ventures. Ann opened Constable Gallery in their hometown of Kansas City, and she became known as the foremost authority on the artist’s work. In 1996, the Constables founded the Friends of the Benton Home to raise funds to maintain the Benton’s residence as a public museum. They also co-founded the Benton Foundation to fund a statue of Benton on the campus of the Kansas City Art Institute.
Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is delighted at the opportunity to work with the Constable family to present these unique works in our October 15 American and European Art auction in Chicago, along with other fine property from the Estate on October 12 in St. Louis.
