Specialist, 19th Century American and European Art

Chicago, Illinois

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, one of the nation’s leading and fastest growing fine-art auction houses, seeks a Fine Art Specialist.

Responsibilities:

  • Focus primarily on business development for the Fine Art Department with an emphasis on securing consignments and building long term client relationships with private collectors, institutions and industry contacts
  • Research and catalogue property for auction with the goal of assigning auction estimates, also valuing property for IRS (estate tax, gift tax, donation, etc.) and insurance appraisals as needed
  • Act as the senior contact for client inquiries regarding auction, consignment and appraisal services, negotiation of consignment terms and explanation of the auction process relating to Fine Art
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop strategies to reach new potential consignors and ensure seamless client service
  • Proactively develop new opportunities to grow the volume of transactions on both the consignment and buyer sides of the department
  • Work with other senior specialists to promote the auction by helping clients at auction previews, speaking to clients about the property, developing, tracking and communicating client interest in lots and executing bids at auction

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates possess a minimum of 3-5 years experience in the auction or gallery setting, direct hands-on experience with and knowledge of 19th century American and European art, excellent communication and client service skills, a strong sense of professionalism and a proven ability to initiate new business. Bachelors or master’s degree in art history or business preferred. Some domestic travel will be required.

Internships

Chicago, Illinois

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers offers junior and senior level undergraduate students and graduate students unpaid spring, summer and fall internships at our West Loop location in Chicago. Successful candidates will be placed in positions according to their backgrounds and interests and will gain first-hand experience in auction house operations. A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required.
