SELLING AT AUCTION

Decades of experience combined with a relentless pursuit of top sales results make Leslie Hindman Auctioneers the logical choice for selling at auction. Whether coordinating the sale of an entire estate or selling one or two things from your own home, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will streamline the process and work towards the ultimate goal of your complete satisfaction.

What’s it worth?

The first step in determining whether you’re ready to sell something or not is obtaining an appraisal of what it’s worth. Our staff is pleased to offer complimentary, informal auction appraisals of the fair market value of your property through one of many ways:

  • Send digital photographs and basic information* on your property to info@lesliehindman.com
  • Submit printed photographs and basic information* on your property to:
        Leslie Hindman Auctioneers
        Attn: Consignment Department
        1338 West Lake Street
        Chicago, Illinois 60607
  • Call our consignment department at 312.280.1212 to speak to a specialist or account executive on the telephone and/or set up an appointment to bring your property to the auction house for an in-person evaluation.

* Basic information includes artist or maker’s name, medium, measurements, provenance, and any additional information you may have. Please allow two weeks for us to process your request.

Our staff occasionally visits homes when necessary but it is customary for us to review photographs first.

Estate and Formal Written Appraisal Services

For larger groups of property or estates, please call Alyssa Quinlan in our Trusts, Estates and Appraisal department at 312.334.4204 to discuss your situation. We can develop a custom plan to fit your specific needs.

Consignment Agreement

After reviewing the auction estimates, the next step in the consignment process is to review a Consignment Agreement for your property drafted to our mutually agreed specifications. Points to be reviewed include an assignment of a date for the auction of your property, sales commission, insurance charges and policies, photography and shipping fees, and any use of name that you permit us to use in advertising or printed catalogues. Complete confidentiality is assumed unless otherwise noted on the Consignment Agreement.

Delivering your property

If the consignment agreement and presale auction estimate for your property formulated by our specialists meets with your approval, you can either make an appointment to drop off your property or have an account executive assist you in hiring one of our recommended third party shippers. Should we arrange your move, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers can be billed for the charges and deduct them from your final settlement.

Presale confirmation of estimates

Communication is an essential part of the selling process, and our staff will confirm auction estimates and catalogue descriptions shortly after the property arrives at our gallery. A final receipt will be mailed to your home for your records. Any changes or additions may be discussed at this time.

Presale advice and catalogue

Auctions at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers benefit from both a fully illustrated online catalogue, and either a printed catalogue or listing. Approximately three weeks before the sale, a Presale Advice will be mailed to you listing all of your property and its corresponding lot numbers; should the auction your property is included in have a printed catalogue, it will be mailed to at that time as well. Please click here for more information on our printed and online catalogues

Post-sale results and settlement

Your account executive will contact you after the auction with the results of the sale. Prices realized are also posted on our website (please note our website listings include the buyer’s premium while the seller’s settlement is based on the hammer price). Settlement checks and statements are mailed out thirty days after the auction per the Consignment Agreement.
